Reverting skinweights on controller movement

Im painting some skin weights via Maya’s default skin weight tool, moving my model’s controllers to check how the weights feel. however when I do so, the edited weights change back to the original bound values and only change to my edited weights when I re-activate the weight tool?

I cant seem to find any explanations searching around, any help would be appreciated

Can you show a screenshot of the history on your mesh? I wonder if there is some history other than the skinCluster.
